It was not intended for practising musicians. My claim is that the musical theorizing which crystallized in the celebrated conception of the music of the spheres was a kind of proto-science; while for Greek thinkers, human music was an art or craft, in the present-day sense of those terms, and a lowly echo of cosmic harmony. So in fact there was a divide, not the unity imagined by Goethe and his successors. The idea of the music of the spheres originates in a very ancient mathematical conception of music which asserts its connections with number.

The practical art or craft - according to the theorists and philosophers - was a pale reflection of music in a second sense, the inaudible Pythagorean harmony underlying the universe. To reiterate, the authorities that are cited about Greek music tend to be theorists and philosophers, who were not interested in musical practice. By the same token, aulos players were probably not interested in the concept of the harmony of the spheres. Kristeller, for instance, is explicit that his primary resource is treatises on the arts, not actual artworks.
