The reason is that the subject matter in most psychological investigations is pliable in a way that the subject matter of the natural sciences is not. This pliability results from the fact that psychological experimenters and subjects are usually members of the same cultural-linguistic community, while the conditions of experimentation prevent the reciprocity normally found in such communities. Subjects in most psychological investigations accept a role that virtually eliminates their normal capacity for answering back.

Epistemic objects come in various kinds. One way of differentiating them is in terms of the kind of construction to which they owe their existence: some, such as theoretical inventions, might be the product of purely discursive practices; in others, material practices that impinge on bodies, human and nonhuman, might play the crucial role. But in most cases both kinds of practice will be involved, and what makes for distinctions among epistemic objects are the differences between different kinds of discursive and material practices.
