Xl Page xiii Foreword By Richard Batman Washington Irving's A Tour on the Prairies came about, at least in part, because of a happy series of accidental meetings. In the spring of 1832, Irving left Europe to return to the United States on the packet ship Havre, and while on board, met the Englishman Charles Latrobe and his Swiss traveling companion, Count Albert-Alexandre de Pourtales. A friendship developed, and after reaching the United States, the three men made several excursions together. At first these trips were confined mainly to the Eastto West Point, to the Catskills and the land of Sleepy Hollow, to the White Mountains, to Saratoga Springs, and finally to Niagara Falls.
